The United States has expanded the range of eligible degrees for the post-graduate STEM OPT program by adding new fields of study. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made amendments to the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, incorporating eight additional qualifying majors.

In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security explained that the aforementioned list is utilized to determine whether the degrees obtained by certain F-1 nonimmigrant students upon completing their program of study meet the criteria for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree as defined by the DHS. Meeting this requirement is necessary for F-1 students to be eligible to apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion optional practical training (OPT).

The scoring process is standardized, ensuring that all test takers are assessed based on the same criteria, and the choice of format has no bearing on the fairness and accuracy of the evaluation. IELTS, a highly recognized English language proficiency assessment, is accepted by over 11,000 organizations in 140 countries. It is a mandatory requirement for study abroad and immigration applications in numerous nations.

The computer-delivered IELTS format enables test takers to complete the entire exam, including listening, reading, and writing sections, on a computer at an official test center. Conversely, the paper-based format utilizes pen-and-paper for the listening, reading, and writing sections. Regardless of the format, the speaking test is conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner in person.

The Australian government has recently made an important announcement regarding the acceptance of TOEFL scores. Until July 26, TOEFL scores were considered acceptable for visa purposes in Australia. However, the government has now decided that it will no longer consider TOEFL iBT scores for this purpose, and this change will be effective immediately. This decision was officially communicated through a statement on Australia's Department of Home Affairs website.

The TOEFL iBT, which launched its enhanced version with improved features worldwide on July 26, was designed to enhance the test-taker experience by reducing test time and simplifying the registration process, all while maintaining the test's renowned rigor and reliability. Despite these improvements, the Australian government has chosen not to include the TOEFL iBT as an approved English language test for visa applicants until further notice. The Educational Testing Service (ETS), responsible for administering the TOEFL, submitted the enhanced test for review by Australia's Department of Home Affairs (DHA) as part of the standard process for evaluating English language tests used for visa applications.

Shortly after unveiling an extended post-study work visa for Indian students, France has revealed that even those who have completed just a single semester in the country are now eligible for a 5-year Schengen visa.

The French perspective is that even a single semester spent by an Indian student in France establishes a bond that deserves nurturing and celebration. This philosophy drives the eligibility of Indian students with a Master's degree or higher, who have studied in France for at least a semester, for a 5-year short-stay Schengen visa. This unique arrangement for Indian alumni is designed to facilitate enduring connections with France and their peers, as affirmed by the official statement from the French Embassy.

According to the official announcement, to qualify for eligibility, candidates should have completed a minimum of one semester of studies in France and have attained a Master's degree or higher from a recognized university in India, France, or a third country. These individuals are also required to submit a thoroughly filled visa application that adheres to the standard Schengen prerequisites. The embassy has today revealed its aspiration for France to host 30,000 students from India by the year 2030.

When it comes to health insurance coverage for Indian students pursuing education overseas, it's important to note that traditionally, there were two primary types of products prior to the pandemic. Firstly, there was an insurance policy that encompassed their travel to the host country. Secondly, there was a health insurance plan that was mandatory for students while studying in that specific country. In the present day, we observe the emergence of numerous hybrid policies that integrate both aspects.

To begin, the first step is to determine the geographical location, as the insurance premium will be contingent upon this factor. If your child is pursuing studies in the US or Canada, the premium will markedly differ from that applicable to a student studying in the United Kingdom. Thus, geography plays a pivotal role in determining the cost. Alongside geographical considerations, the medical coverage limit you opt for holds significant importance. Generally, it is advisable to select a minimum coverage limit of $100,000 to adequately address potential health-related incidents that might occur in the chosen country.

What exactly is travel medical insurance for Indian students studying abroad, and how can it be obtained?

Germany's Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, revealed that India has the largest contingent of international students in Germany, surpassing 42,000 individuals. Notably, this marks a remarkable 25% surge within a single year.

This surge has catapulted India to the top spot among foreign student groups in Germany, surpassing expectations. It's evident that German education holds immense appeal for Indian students.

The majority of UK applicants will experience minimal effects from these changes. If you're aiming to study in the UK without bringing dependents, and you intend to finish your course entirely before returning to India or seeking employment in the UK, there are no alterations to consider.

An additional crucial point to keep in mind is that alterations concerning dependents and post-study employment will exclusively impact students commencing courses from January 1, 2024. If you're applying to initiate your course in the autumn of 2023, there will be no impact on your situation.

Here are the primary modifications:

Starting January 1, 2024, international students will lose the privilege to bring dependents, except for those enrolled in postgraduate courses categorized as 'research programs.'

International students will no longer be permitted to transition from the student route to work routes, such as skilled worker visas, before finishing their studies.

The UK Government underscores that these revisions "maintain the option for dependants already in the UK to extend their stay, and for international students embarking on taught postgraduate courses prior to 1 January 2024 to bring dependants.

In an effort to enhance the financial security of international students and discourage immediate job hunting upon arrival, the Australian government has revealed a rise in the minimum savings criteria for acquiring a student visa. Starting October 1, international students must exhibit savings totaling $24,505, marking a 17% increase from the previous benchmark.

This modification represents the initial update to the savings requirement since 2019, highlighting the essential realignment with prevailing economic circumstances. Additionally, the government's choice involves the rectification of a previously exploited gap, which allowed educational institutions to shift international students – those with less than six months in Australia – into a specific scheme providing work privileges.

Concurrent enrollments, where students can register for multiple courses simultaneously, have gained significant traction among international students. These changes to student visa prerequisites and work access rules highlight the government's dedication to upholding a harmonious and viable educational setting for international students in Australia.

In the "Global University Employability Ranking" by Times Higher Education, France secures the second position. With the recent agreement signed between India and France, the latter anticipates a rise in the influx of Indian students into the country. The number of students heading to France has consistently risen by approximately 25 percent each year, and this encouraging pattern has persisted during the initial eight months of 2023 without interruption.

There exist numerous compelling reasons for Indian students to opt for France as their destination for higher education. When it comes to the cost of studies, tuition fees at public higher education institutions are highly affordable, with a maximum of 2700 €/year for a Bachelor's degree and 3700 €/year for a Master's degree. This affordability is made possible because the French government generously subsidizes higher education, extending these benefits to non-EU students as well. Additionally, international students can enjoy various advantages, including social security, rental assistance, and public transport benefits, provided by the government.

Furthermore, France annually provides scholarships totaling more than Rs 15 crore exclusively tailored for Indian students, further enhancing the accessibility and affordability of education. These scholarships encompass a wide range of fields of study, enabling students to pursue their chosen academic paths without being hindered by financial limitations.

Indian individuals preparing to take the IELTS English language test now have access to an innovative feature to support them in reaching the necessary score for their international educational and career aspirations. The IELTS One Skill Retake is now offered in India at eligible IELTS Computer Delivered test centers. It grants test-takers the opportunity to retake any one of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) if they fail to achieve their desired score on their initial attempt. This feature is presently applicable to those who have chosen the Computer Delivered IELTS test.

The IELTS One Skill Retake enhances fairness by offering a chance to retake a specific skill if the test taker believes their initial performance did not accurately reflect their language proficiency level," noted Warwick Freeland, the Managing Director of IELTS at IDP Education.

For those who opt for an IELTS One Skill Retake, will receive a revised Test Report Form (TRF) containing their updated score, which can be utilized for immigration and academic purposes. Depending on their new score, test takers can decide whether to use their original or updated TRF for the skill they chose to retake.

It's important for test takers to be aware that the IELTS One Skill Retake option is presently limited to Australia, with IDP intending to introduce it in additional countries in the near future. IELTS is actively collaborating with governments and organizations to facilitate the acceptance of the IELTS One Skill Retake, and we recommend that test takers stay informed by regularly checking our website for forthcoming updates.

In India, the IELTS One Skill Retake option is currently accessible.

The UK is actively pursuing the establishment of an offshore campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) within its borders, as confirmed by high-ranking British government officials. These officials have indicated that numerous UK universities have initiated discussions with IITs to explore the feasibility of such a collaboration. Furthermore, they have expressed strong interest in establishing their own branch campuses in India, pending the final regulatory framework from the University Grants Commission (UGC). With five UK universities already successfully operating campuses in Malaysia, the UK possesses the necessary expertise to facilitate this expansion.

Steve Smith, the International Education Champion of the UK government, emphasized the ongoing discussions regarding the potential establishment of IIT campuses abroad. He noted that dialogues have taken place with the Indian High Commission in London, underscoring the belief that the presence of IITs or other premier Indian institutions in the UK would symbolize the robust two-way relationship between the two nations. The UK remains open and enthusiastic about fostering such partnerships.

Two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have already taken concrete steps towards establishing their offshore campuses by formalizing agreements. Specifically, IIT Madras is in the process of creating its campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, while IIT Delhi is actively working on an offshore campus in Abu Dhabi.

When queried about the interest of UK universities in establishing their own campuses in India, Steve Smith explained that there is indeed significant interest in doing so. However, he emphasized the importance of having a well-defined regulatory framework in place before such commitments can be made. He pointed out that no governing body, regardless of location, would undertake such endeavors without a clear and agreed-upon regulatory framework. Notably, considerable progress has been made in this regard over the past two to three years, with the University Grants Commission (UGC) having introduced draft regulations for foreign universities looking to establish campuses in India as early as January of this year.

British officials are currently in discussions to establish an IIT campus in the UK.

Australia has implemented a new regulation that prohibits international students from enrolling in two courses simultaneously during the initial six months of their primary study program. This policy change aims to crack down on unscrupulous education providers who have been exploiting the concurrent enrollment policy to encourage students to switch institutions.

The government asserts that these updated regulations are designed to safeguard the integrity of the international education sector and protect students from potential exploitation. It's important to note that these rules do not affect students who are already enrolled in concurrent courses. However, students seeking to enroll in a second course concurrently after the initial six months of their primary study program will need to seek approval from their educational institution.

There are a few exceptions to these regulations.

For instance, students will still retain the ability to concurrently enroll in a course if it is an approved component of a combined or double degree program. Furthermore, students facing extenuating circumstances or having a valid reason for concurrent enrollment may be eligible for exemptions from these rules.

However, under the new guidelines, students aspiring to pursue a second course alongside their primary one will be required to wait until they have completed at least six months of their initial course. This delay could potentially affect their graduation timeline and may also pose challenges in terms of finding part-time employment for financial support.

These revised regulations will also have implications for students planning to switch to a different course after completing the initial six months of their studies. If they cannot identify a suitable concurrent course, they might experience a delay in their transfer plans.

Australia will disallow international students from concurrently enrolling in two courses.

The 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject reveal a notable shift at the top, showcasing a more diverse array of leading nations excelling across various academic disciplines. While universities from the US and UK maintain their presence in the rankings, other countries are making significant advancements, particularly in fields such as business and economics, education, social sciences, and beyond.

In the domain of business and economics, the top 10 rankings have experienced substantial transformation over the past five years. Previously, these positions were exclusively held by institutions from the US and UK. However, this year's rankings feature two Chinese institutions, Tsinghua University, and Peking University, among the top 10, underscoring China's expanding influence in this academic domain.

A similar trend of diversification is evident in the field of education. Five years ago, nine of the top 10 positions were dominated by US and UK institutions, with Hong Kong securing the remaining spot. Today, universities from five different countries, including China, Canada, Hong Kong, the US, and the UK, have claimed spots in the top 10.

Although the United States and the United Kingdom maintain their strong presence at the forefront of the rankings across all 11 subject areas, there are some noteworthy exceptions. Harvard University and Stanford University shine as leaders, each topping three subjects. Harvard excels in engineering, law, and life sciences, while Stanford leads in arts and humanities, psychology, and shares the top position in social sciences. Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claims the top spot in business and economics and also shares the lead in social sciences.

There are several other intriguing trends to consider. STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields exhibit dominance in the Middle East and North Africa, highlighting their emphasis on these disciplines. Sub-Saharan African nations distinguish themselves in clinical and health-related subjects, while North African and Arabic countries place significant importance on computer science, engineering, and physical sciences. In Northern Europe, a strong focus on the sciences is evident, while regions in Southern and Eastern Europe prioritize humanities. South America, in contrast, tends to favor non-scientific disciplines.

In this year's rankings, Germany and the Netherlands emerge as top performers in continental Europe, particularly within the top 50 universities across various subjects. Notably, compared to the World University Rankings in 2020, there is a noticeable decrease in the dominance of the US-UK bloc in the top 50 rankings for social sciences, education, business, and economics.

Top Countries According to Times Higher Education's 2024 World University Rankings

According to the 2024 World University Rankings by subject, this year's leading institutions for engineering maintain their positions, with Harvard University and Stanford University representing the United States at the forefront. Imperial College London has notably advanced into the top 10, securing the tenth position, while the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge are the other two UK institutions in this esteemed category.

The third, sixth, seventh, and eighth places are occupied by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology, and Princeton University, respectively.

Notably, the top 10 includes six universities from the United States and one from Singapore, signifying a strong global representation. Furthermore, the United States has increased its presence in the top 300, with five additional universities compared to the previous year.

In the World University Rankings 2024, Harvard University claims the top position among engineering colleges.

Canada showed the most substantial year-on-year growth in 2022, signaling a notable surge in demand within the student mobility sector following potential declines due to the Covid-19 pandemic in preceding years. Before commencing higher studies in Australia, here are the five key changes and advancements you should be aware of.

Higher scores in English proficiency tests

On Monday, Australia announced plans to revise visa regulations for international students, aiming to reduce its migrant intake in the upcoming two years. The updated guidelines necessitate higher scores on English proficiency exams for international students. Additionally, increased scrutiny will be applied to second visa applications, potentially extending the duration of their stay.

Typically, to pursue studies in Australia, students must achieve a minimum overall score of 6.5 in IELTS, with no individual band less than 6.0 for postgraduate programs. Undergraduate applicants should have attained a minimum overall score of 6.0. Nevertheless, there are anticipated alterations to these prerequisites, so prospective students are advised to refer to their chosen universities for updated requirements.

Change in work hours

Starting in July 2023, students holding a student visa will have a maximum work allowance of 48 hours per fortnight, equivalent to 24 hours per week while pursuing their studies. This adjustment aims to offer students greater flexibility in managing their finances while emphasizing that their primary focus should remain on their studies.

Yet, within institution-defined study breaks, international students have the freedom to work without limitations. Furthermore, any work integrated into the course curriculum does not contribute to the 48-hour restriction. Moreover, individuals undertaking a master's by research or a PhD are unrestricted in their work hours.

Indian educational degrees to be recognized in Australia

Under this fresh agreement, degrees earned in Australia will be acknowledged in India, and conversely, degrees obtained in India will be recognized in Australia. Nonetheless, this arrangement does not currently extend to professional qualifications.

Temporary Graduate Visa

Despite numerous alterations in student visas in recent years, Indian graduates will maintain eligibility for the Temporary Graduate Visa under the following terms:

Two years post a bachelor's degree completion

Three years following the conclusion of a Master's degree

Four years after completing a Ph.D.

However, this adjustment comes with an exemption for health and care workers, acknowledging their pivotal role and ensuring their exclusion from this heightened requirement. This alteration reflects the government's focus on redefining its approach to immigration, balancing economic needs with sector-specific considerations, particularly within vital healthcare sectors. The revised threshold aims to ensure that incoming skilled workers meet higher income standards, yet it recognizes the indispensable contributions of healthcare professionals by exempting them from this stringent criterion.

Yale University has introduced a new policy for standardized testing in undergraduate admissions, broadening the range of acceptable tests for first-year and transfer applicants.

After implementing a four-year test-optional policy, Yale University will now mandate that all applicants submit test scores. However, the university will broaden the accepted tests to include AP and IB exams, alongside the SAT and ACT," stated an official announcement.

Yale's decision stemmed from the realization that test scores, along with various other factors, offer a comprehensive assessment. "Applications lacking scores, particularly from students in resource-limited high schools, may provide insufficient evidence of readiness for Yale," stated Jeremiah Quinlan, dean of undergraduate admissions and financial aid. He emphasized that even scores below Yale’s median range can bolster confidence in a student's potential for academic success. Quinlan's remarks underscored research indicating that requiring scores from all applicants benefits rather than disadvantages those from under-resourced backgrounds.

The university also emphasized that students who have not taken any AP or IB exams by their senior year of high school should make sure to complete either the ACT or SAT.

On Friday, March 1, the Duolingo English Test (DET) revealed the introduction of newly designed question formats across various sections of the English proficiency examination. These adjustments will become effective starting April 2. Individuals who prefer to take the test without these modifications can do so by opting for the certified test before April 2.

The changes introduced in the Duolingo English Test include:

Extension of the 'Read, Then Write' question in the 'Interactive Writing' section: Previously, users read a prompt and wrote about it for five minutes. Now, a follow-up prompt related to the original one has been added. Users will have an additional three minutes to elaborate on this follow-up idea, resulting in a total duration of 8 minutes and 30 seconds.

Redesigned question types across various sections of the exam: The test will feature new and redesigned question formats to assess English proficiency effectively.

Implementation date: These modifications will be integrated into the test starting April 2.

Option for the certified test: Individuals who prefer to experience the test without these changes can opt for the certified test before April 2.

The second modification pertains to the 'Read and Select' section, where users are tasked with identifying actual English words from a set of multiple words displayed on a single screen. Under the revised format, users will still need to discern legitimate words, but they will now be presented individually on multiple screens. Each word will be displayed for five seconds, allowing users to make their selections. Test takers can anticipate encountering approximately 15 – 18 words in this section of the test.

The 'Fill in the blanks' section includes 6 to 9 sentences with an incomplete word that requires filling in. The revised version will also offer contextual clues to aid in accurately completing the sentences.
